BlackBerry Q10 Now Available for Pre-Order in UK

News about the BlackBerry Z10 has been everywhere, but you still yearn for the tactile comfort a QWERTY keyboard brings. Fret not, as BlackBerry announces its physical keyboard-equipped BlackBerry Q10 is available for pre-order, at least in the United Kingdom. Shipping is expected at the end of April.
The second BB10-powered smartphone will be available on Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Three, EE, and TalkMobile. Carphone Warehouse lists the phone at £579.95 unlocked or free with a two-year, £36-per-month carrier contract. The pricing is on par with other smartphones in the UK market.
For those living in other countries, BlackBerry says in its blog that “details on availability to follow soon.” Let’s just hope “soon” does not mean “months from now.”

BlackBerry Q10: “Better” Than Z10

The BlackBerry Q10 looks like the BlackBerry Bold, but with BB10 operating system. It comes with a 3.1-inch touchscreen right above a full QWERTY keypad.  Early reviews have said that the Q10 is so good, it is even more worth the wait compared to the Z10.

BB10 continue over the new BlackBerry Q10?

Over a month after the Z10 was launched to the market, BlackBerry has announced that its much-awaited BlackBerry Q10 will be available in Canada beginning May 1. The BlackBerry 10-powered, keypad-laden smartphone will also be available in the UK and US.
Giant carriers over at the Great White North–namely Rogers Wireless, Bell Mobility, and Telus–will all offer the new Q10, which subscribers can avail for $199 subsidized with a three-year contract. Canadians can also purchase the unlocked Q10 from retailers such as Future Shop and Walmart Canada.

But before Canada would even get their hands on the BlackBerry Q10, BlackBerry has stated that the folks over at the United Kingdom would get the Q10 at an earlier, unspecified date. American Crackberries, meanwhile, need not fret because they will have their time to purchase their own Q10 by the end of May for $249 with a two-year contract.

The BlackBerry Q10 is the second handset that runs on BlackBerry 10 mobile OS. Its QWERTY keypad, a remnant of previous BlackBerry handsets, sets the device apart from the touchscreen-equipped Z10. BlackBerry has stated that over 1 million Z10 handsets have been shipped worldwide, even posting increased revenue.
Will the excitement for the BB10 continue over the new BlackBerry Q10? We will find out soon.

GlobalSat BT-308 Bluetooth GPS Receiver

Bluetooth GPS receivers are gaining popularity as PDA manufacturers scale back expansion slots options in newer models. The promise of a Bluetooth GPS is a wireless, no-tangle alternative to cables, both power and data. There are a number of things we really like about this receiver.

Signal acquisition is excellent, the unit is small, easy to use (on or off) and has impressive battery life. On the first day we used the BT-308 we accidentally left the receiver on after doing a 40 minute software test . Six hours later we 'discovered' that the power had been left on so we just connected again and kept on testing. Line of sight range is about 25 feet, and this was achieved by carefully holding our testing PDA so as not to block reception. While doing this test we discovered that how the PDA is held can affect the quality of the Bluetooth connection. In fact, even when the PDA and GPS are just a couple of feet apart, placing a thumb over some areas of the PDA would result in a complete loss of connection.

Anytime the Bluetooth connection was interupted the Bluetooth Connection Manager would pop up. We found this to be a nuisance and feel that the Connection Manager should make an effort to reconnect on its own. This behavior may vary from PDA to PDA. We also experienced a number of known Bluetooth bugs with our iPAQ. When the power is turned off with an active Bluetooth connection the PDA locks up and must be reset. Check with your manufacturer for a ROM update if you're having Bluetooth problems. Overall we were pleased with the BT-308 as a GPS receiver -- quick fix times and tracking of 9 or 10 satellites were typical. We were less impressed with the Bluetooth experience (not the fault of GlobalSat) and continue to favor hardware-to-hardware PDA/GPS solutions. While having a wireless GPS is cool, having a rock solid no-hassle CompactFlash GPS is way cool.

Garmin iQue M5 PocketPC with GPS

The Garmin iQue M5 is one of only a few Pocket PCs to include an integrated GPS receiver which flips up from the back of the unit. Perhaps the best feature of the M5 is that it allows 3rd party software to access the GPS data stream. This includes Navzilla version 1.4.0 and higher. The official Garmin FAQs for the M5 say that NMEA data is delivered on COM2. On our unit, NMEA data from the built-in GPS is found on COM4 not COM2. Screen brightness of the M5 is good - not as bright as the very popular 396 and 496 units but the M5 is readable in direct sunlight. The M5 GPS is also more selective when it comes time to use a satellite with a marginal signal. The Haicom 303MMF (reviewed below) will include satellites with signal-to-noise ratios in the 20's.

Where as the M5 GPS seems to only use satellites with an SNR of 30 or better. The high quality accessories include a USB / power base, car adapter with speaker, suction cup mount, power dongle and software. Since the M5 is primarily used for ground navigation, Garmin includes a version of MapSource in the box. Some sellers are also including the updated 2008 version of City Navigator. If you plan on using the M5 for road navigation, consider purchasing an SD memory card with at least 1GB of storage.

It is possible to get an Internet connection when the M5 is paired with a compatible Bluetooth cell phone. One problem we had is that we are not able to make the connection using the connection dialog found at the top of the screen. To make a connection we have to run the BTExplorer application, select the cell phone in the Favorites list and then Connect from the menu.

Overall the M5 is an excellent value. Prices for used units are around $150.

HTC Google G1 Android Phone

The HTC G1 was the original Android phone. While not as fast or as light weight as later generations, this capable Android v1.6 phone represents a good value on the used market. And if you are only interested in running apps and not making calls the phone can be used without a carrier service plan.

So long as you have access to WiFi you can download apps, use the web browser and run Navzilla. The quality of the GPS is average, not great. The battery drains quickly so if using continuously plan on purchasing a power cord for your vehical. The G1 slide-out keyboard is one of the better keyboards, 5 rows means fewer FN-Key presses. The best deals are for locked phones which in the U.S. will work on the T-Mobile network if you're interested in using it for calls. Unlocked phones will work on any GSM network and fetch more.

The Military Mosquito Countermeasure

Mosquitoes can be quite problematic, especially during the summer months. It always pays to come prepared by dealing with mosquitoes early before it becomes a problem. You can never get a better deal than using what the military uses to handle their mosquito problem. Presenting, the Military Mosquito Countermeasure, a device to deal with that pesky pest the military way.

With a military sounding name to it, the Military Mosquito Countermeasure is simply, a mosquito repelling device to most of us civilians. But its military grade protection may be something that would be quite useful. This device tested by the the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and is proven to be 95 percent effective in repelling mosquitoes. It uses a mat doused with d-cis/trans allethrin, a synthetic version of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum, to repel those pests.

A butane fueled heater vaporizes the repellent to create a 15 feet by 15 feet zone around a user where mosquitoes as well as other pesky biting insects wouldn’t dare cross. The Military Mosquito Countermeasure is available at Hammacher Schlemmer for US$35. Repellent mat refills are also available separately for US$25 a set.

The keyboard itself features a set of iPhone-specific hotkeys with functions ranging from allowing to input data into the smartphone to controlling music playback. Worm Disguised as Lady Gaga Tweet Wreaks Havoc

It has come to the attention of online security experts that a worm has been crawling its way around computers fairly fast because it is disguised as a YouTube link for a “banned” Lady Gaga video.

The bit.ly link leads you to a fake YouTube page and then asks for permission to access their Twitter account. Authorize that and your Twitter account begins to send out infected tweets about the banned Lady Gaga video, prying on potential gullible followers.

Even Lady Gaga herself was upset about what happened. “Whoever is hacking my Twitter must answer to 10 million monsters and Twitter police. #Don’tMakeMeCallTheApostles,” the musician tweeted.

Apparently, her own Twitter stream became a victim of the worm as well, sending an assortment of infected tweets including one mentioning Shakira (as pictured). Curiously, most of the tweets are in Spanish.

Twitter users may wish to have their accounts unaccessible to third-party applications just to make sure.

HTC Sensation vs Samsung Galaxy S2

HTC and Samsung had two of the bestselling non-iPhone smartphones of 2010, with the HTC Desire being a show stopping success and the Samsung Galaxy S being the biggest selling Android phone of all time. It was always obvious that both companies would follow up their successes with new devices but, while Samsung were keen to show off their Galaxy S2 device, the updated Desire smartphones unveiled by HTC at the 2011 Mobile World Congress did not appear to offer much new.

This is because the Desire S, that many people had speculated to be the Desire 2, was in fact just a slightly tweaked modification and the phones true successor would come in the form of the new HTC Sensation. Previously leaked onto the internet under the name of the HTC Pyramid, the Sensation is likely to become HTC's latest flagship smartphone with its only real contender for this title being the equally fantastic EVO 3D.

Both companies have gone down the route of expanding their phone screens, with the Galaxy S2 and Sensation now featuring very spacious 4.3" displays. HTC has opted for Super LCD as its technology of choice while Samsung is keen to show off its latest Super AMOLED Plus screen technology which is arguably the best in the business at present. Although the differences may only seem slight on paper Super AMOLED Plus does offer significant improvements over its predecessor Super AMOLED. While Samsung may win in this regard both screens are of exceptionally high quality and are ideal for all forms of visual smartphone entertainment.

Both phones run on Android Gingerbread with all the obvious goodies that that entails, although each company has added its own interface. For Samsung this is the TouchWiz UI while HTC has of course thrown in its trusty Sense UI which many people consider to be the best Android UI around. Both interfaces are really easy to use and at the end of the day this factor may just boil down to personal preference or brand loyalty.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 was originally intended to come with a dual core 1GHz processor but in order to make it more competitive against newer rivals, the HTC Sensation included, this has been bumped up to 1.2GHz. The Sensation also features the same processing power although it has a little less memory to play around with compared to the Galaxy's 1GB, with just 768MB on offer. In this regards the Galaxy S2 probably has a slight upper hand in terms of performance although there is not a huge difference.

As the phones both run on Android they both come with excellent entertainment options for music, video and games, with access to Android Market and excellent connectivity through 3G and Wi-Fi. There are also fantastic 8 megapixel cameras with 1080p video recording support on each device although the Galaxy S2 has a better front facing camera at 2 megapixels compared to the Sensation's VGA camera.

These two handsets are fairly evenly matched and the differences are only slight. At the end of the day any choice between them will probably boil down to personal preference, brand loyalty or the aesthetic appeal of either device. Either way though, these two Androids look set to phenomenal successes in the coming months and worthy successors to their 2010 forebears.
